My urban bicycle adventure – sprinkled with travel to other places – has been active for ten months. Over that time, I’ve pedalled over 2963 kilometres.

Through this blog, I’ve been documenting my personal experiment in bike riding and story-telling. I’ve committed to riding my bicycle as much as possible in everyday life. I’m testing the boundaries of myself – my laziness, discipline, fitness and lifestyle – as well as the boundaries of my city – its infrastructure, culture and lifestyle – for cycling with ease.

My project is about the bicycle as a means of transport, the healthy lifestyle it brings, the money it saves, the simplicity, the freedom and the smaller footprint it leaves on the earth. It’s about where my bicycle takes me and where it doesn’t.

So with my eleventh month starting, I’m so very happy to know that ‘Love to Ride’ is starting on the Gold Coast.

‘Love to Ride’ aims to encourage more people to enjoy cycling more often. An initiative of an organisation called Challenge for Change, it has been implemented by 4700 companies in nine countries.

While I’ve been running my own little experiment with a sample of ONE, the ‘Love to Ride’ program cultivates behaviour change across entire communities. Their ingredients? In their words: “an online platform, local promotion and good ‘ol human interaction”.

‘Love to Ride’ statistics gathered through the online platform show the program’s success:

  • On average, 40% of non-cyclists who join ‘Love to Ride’ start cycling weekly, and
  • 43% of occasional cyclists increase their cycling to two or more days per week.

The program suits local government authorities who individually or collectively (as in the UK National Cycle Challenge), implement the program in their towns and cities. And thanks to the Gold Coast City Council (GCCC), my city is now one of them. In the month of October, GCCC launches Love to Ride Gold Coast!

So what does this mean for me and my experiment?

Well I’m very excited about it. I’ve registered for ‘Love to Ride’ so I can connect within the online community of bicycle riders and record my rides in the ‘Love to Ride’ online platform (which can provide vital data for planning bicycle infrastructure).

I’m also keen to see where this October focus leads me. Will it open new doors so I can encourage others to pedal more often? Will it open my eyes to other changes I can make?

  1. Register on the Love to Ride Gold Coast website (it’s free)
  2. Ride your bike for 10 minutes or more, as often as you can.
  3. Encourage other people to join you.
  4. Oh and there are prizes too! 🙂

Sunday Cycle

Last week a flurry of south-westerly winds gusted up the east Australian coast and made me reach for the nearest cardigan*. Then suddenly, they left. Strong wind warnings were cancelled. Spring warmth spilled onto lawns, heartened jacaranda blooms and brightened cheeks, pale from winter. Springtime riding became very pleasant.

Sunday is a popular day for cycling. Sunday cycles take some people long distances at a fast pace from pre-dawn starts in sweat-filled lycra. Some Sunday cycles take people to coffee or to brunch with friends. There are Sunday cycles that carry people to organised events for ease of parking. Some Sunday cycles bring families outdoors to the beach or to enjoy the view along the esplanade footpaths and cycle ways.

Today, our Sunday cycle took us into the sunshine, heading south to see if we could spot any Humpback whales.

I packed a thermos of green tea, a mandarin, an apple, towel, swimmers and camera. It’s about eleven kilometres to the lookout at Point Danger and, even riding a casual pace, I expected to be home in a short while.

That was before I saw what was happening by the beach today.

As we rode towards the Currumbin Alley, which is where the Currumbin Creek meets the sea, I saw a line of small swells rolling in on a high tide, dotted with surfers bobbing on their boards waiting for their turn in the line-up. Car parks were full. I was glad to be riding my bike. The surf looked good but perhaps it would be better later when the tide drops. We rode on.

Around the corner on the Currumbin beachfront, the ocean was calm, clear and topped with a blue sky. Then we saw them. Dozens and dozens of little people. Some gathered in groups, some scattered. A palette of running, sitting, laying on the sand, holding hands, listening, yelling, squealing and jumping, splashed with fluorescent pinks and greens and gaggles of adults, observing, some guiding, some calling out loudly.

It was the start of the season for Nippers – the junior lifesavers of Australia’s Surf Life Saving movement. Children aged between five and thirteen can join Nippers and be involved each Sunday morning during the summer to participate, play and have fun on the beach and in the water. They learn valuable skills for life at the beach. Last Summer about 4500 children enrolled as Nippers on the Gold Coast.

The beach was a bundle of young energy playing. It was fun to watch their flashes of determination, effort, confusion, and cheekiness; sometimes flagging interest but mostly plenty of smiles. We rode on.

Further south at Kirra beach, a similar scene was playing out for the Kirra Beach Surf Lifesaving Club. But added to the kerfuffle of dozens of young children, was a sky daubed with kites!

It was the second day of the Gold Coast International Kite Festival. Kite flyers from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Asia and Germany were flying kites over two days at Kirra, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach. Some clouds had formed in the north making for a dramatic backdrop to the bold colours and scale of the kites. One kite was an enormous purple octopus that was thirty metres long!

We rode on, through the milling crowds on the footpaths of Kirra and Coolangatta, and to the foot of the hill that would take us up to the Point Danger Lookout. The Boundary Street climb is long and steady, rising about 17 metres. It’s never as difficult as it first looks but by the time I arrived at the top, I was breathing deeply and relieved to see the wonderfully expansive view of the Coral Sea.

Soon, a plume of spray, whale breath, liquid and misting.

Then, black back, glistening, sleek, graceful, breaks the surface.

Twice.

One large. One small, mirroring its mum.

Springtime in Canberra

Four months ago I was preparing for HARDCOPY in Canberra which is a professional development program for emerging writers for which I was selected. Attending HARDCOPY for three days of workshops in late May meant I ended Autumn in Canberra with some interesting cycling experiences, learnt about Alida’s Adventure to cycle across Australia and joined a valuable network of emerging writers.

One of those writers, Serina Huang – an experienced blogger known as Ms. Frugal Ears – offered to lend me her bicycle for my next visit. And that visit was last weekend when our HARDCOPY group of 26 returned to Canberra for another three days of professional development. This time, the format was a mini-festival called Intro2Industry where we listened and learnt from experienced agents, publishers and authors, about publishing (print and digital), copyright, contracts, the agent’s role, book reviews and social media marketing. It was a wonderful stream of knowledge flowing freely and skilling us for the business side of our writing careers.

So with my sea of information swelling, being able to ride a bicycle was a wonderful way to let it coalesce.

But it wasn’t any ordinary bicycle. No, it wasn’t a beefy blue cruiser like my last visit. This was a cute little yellow foldaway electric bicycle!

Electric bicycles (e-bikes) use a battery that can be removed from the bike and plugged into a regular power supply for recharging. Due to the battery, electric bikes are typically heavier than non-electric bicycles. Serina’s e-bike weighs 35kg. The bike’s body is about 24kg and the battery weighs 11kg. As battery size and weight can vary according to its power, it is possible to have a lighter battery. Catalogues for e-bikes typically specify the body weight and, with advances in design over recent years, this ranges from 18kgs to 25kgs. For my purposes over the weekend, Serina’s cute little yellow e-bike was perfect!

The battery meant my ride was power-assisted as I pedalled any inclines. It also meant that occasionally I could stop pedalling and cruise a little, knowing the battery power will carry me for a short while. It was very enjoyable.

And so was Canberra in its sparkling Spring sunshine. When I visited in late May, the weather was cold and a little bleak for cycling. Not so now. Canberra is at its best with mild temperatures, warm sunshine, trees bursting to life and flowers blooming.

I enjoyed some lovely pedal time. Commonwealth Park (where I got lost during my last visit) has been transformed for Canberra’s famous Floriade festival for four weeks. This meant some of the pathways were closed to bicycles so I explored the other side of Lake Burley Griffin riding past the National Library and along to Bowen Place Crossing.

Bowen Place Crossing is a new underpass for walkers, joggers and cyclists. It was under construction when I visited in May. Now it’s complete! And represents an amazing addition to Canberra’s bicycle infrastructure. I’ve put together a 39 second slideshow of approaching the underpass from Kings Avenue Bridge (it follows with photos below).

So did I enjoy Springtime in Canberra? Absolutely!

Canberra is not only a lovely city to cycle. There is, thanks to the ACT Writers Centre and the Australia Council for the Arts, rich soil for emerging writers and there are wonderful seedlings starting to bloom!
